Farming steps
- Pause at cover and listen for animal calls before moving through likely habitat.
- Use sound and visible signs to locate game without sprinting through the area.
- Check that the animal can be recovered and that the approach or shot will not trap you in open ground.
- Take a shot only when you are ready for the noise to attract attention.
- Watch where the animal falls and approach carefully rather than chasing blindly.
- Use a cutting tool to gut and process the carcass, taking only manageable portions.
- Cook the meat at a fireplace and monitor it so it does not burn; verify it is cooked before eating.
- A loud shot can reveal your position; leave if nearby threats make recovery a poor trade.
- Wear gloves or wash visibly bloody hands before handling food.
Repeat, collect and use
Repeat when game is present and you have ammunition, processing tools, and time to cook. Animal availability is not guaranteed at a particular spot.
Common mistakes
- Shooting before checking the escape and recovery route: choose a safer angle or leave the animal alone.
- Chasing a wounded animal into unknown terrain: keep track of its direction and abandon the pursuit if it becomes unsafe.
- Eating raw meat: cook it first and check its state before consumption.
When to stop or switch
Stop hunting when you have enough food to prepare, your weapon or supplies are low, or the shot has made the area unsafe; return to cover or use a quieter food source.
