Coal

Coal is a useful mined resource for supporting production and power needs. A separate reserve makes it easier to notice when fuel demand is outgrowing supply.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

Coal-bearing blocks exposed in a mine face. Use the scanner and map to distinguish and locate deposits before excavating toward them.

Collect coal by exposing a seam and mining it by hand, then automate the deposit if your build's equipment and power support it. Keep coal near the consumers that need it, but make the stock visible so other factory uses do not exhaust it unnoticed.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • Mining tool for manual collection
  • A separate coal stockpile or chest
  • A route to the machines that consume coal
  • A miner, power, and conveyor if automating
  1. Identify a coal-bearing area with the scanner or by inspecting exposed terrain.
  2. Clear enough surrounding blocks to access the seam without opening an unnecessarily large face.
  3. Mine a starter batch and store it separately from ores and finished products.
  4. Check the actual consumers in your factory and move a working reserve within convenient reach.
  5. When manual collection no longer supplies demand, clear the deposit face and inspect miner placement.
  6. Connect the miner to power and first route its conveyor output to a coal buffer.
  7. After confirming reliable delivery, connect the buffer to the intended fuel or production line.

Farming tips

  • Track coal separately from other materials; a shared container makes consumption harder to see.
  • Keep a reserve available before adding a new coal-consuming machine.

Repeat, collect and use

Manual mining can be repeated at accessible coal seams. An automated line can refill the buffer while the deposit and logistics remain available.

Common mistakes

  • Sending the full stock to one consumer can starve other machines; hold a visible reserve and watch actual use.
  • Treating a scanner marker as a cleared miner face can prevent placement; excavate and validate the face first.
  • Connecting a miner directly to a congested line can conceal the blockage; test into a buffer before extending the network.

When to stop or switch

Stop adding coal capacity when your buffer remains adequate through normal factory operation. Reassess if a new consumer drains it or the delivery line stalls.
