Raw Iron
Java Edition · crafting, gathering and project requirements.
Underground iron and processing
Overworld — stone near Y=16; large veins may occur with tuff in the deepslate layer.
Mine iron ore around the stone layers near Y=16, then smelt raw iron into ingots. Fortune can increase raw drops, while Silk Touch is useful when you specifically want ore blocks.

How to farm
Before you go
- Stone pickaxe or better.
- Furnace or blast furnace and fuel for ingots.
- Lighting, food and a safe descent route.
- Descend safely to around Y=16 and inspect exposed caves or existing mine tunnels.
- Mine iron ore with a suitable pickaxe and collect raw iron; use Fortune if available and desired.
- Watch for tuff-associated large iron veins in the deepslate layer and follow connected ore where practical.
- Return to a furnace and load raw iron into the input slot with fuel below.
- Collect the iron ingots and store them for the recipe or build.
- If you used Silk Touch, keep ore blocks separate until you can process them.
- Repeat the route when your project needs more iron.
Farming tips
- Silk Touch returns ore blocks instead of raw iron; choose it only if that is the output you want.
- A furnace can process several raw items, so gather enough before making a dedicated smelting batch.
Repeat, collect and use
Repeatable by mining additional veins; ore does not regenerate.
Common mistakes
- Using a pickaxe below stone tier: upgrade the tool before mining.
- Expecting Silk Touch to produce raw iron: smelt the ore block later if ingots are needed.
- Ignoring connected ore in a tuff-rich vein: inspect adjacent blocks before moving on.
When to stop or switch
Stop when the ingot count meets the recipe or project need, then return to the surface to avoid carrying excess risk.
