WHERE & HOW TO FARM Plant and repeatedly harvest a water-side row Your base — riverbank or water channel with plantable dirt or sand alongside it.
Plant sugar cane on eligible dirt or sand directly beside water, then harvest the upper stalk while leaving the bottom block planted. The crop can regrow to a maximum natural height of three blocks, providing a simple repeatable base supply when the area remains active.

Before you go Starter sugar cane. Dirt or sand beside water at the planting block's level. A nearby base area that remains within active simulation range. Storage for harvested cane. Prepare a water channel or choose a riverbank with accessible water. Place dirt or sand directly beside the water at the level where the cane will be planted. Plant one sugar cane on each eligible block; water only below or diagonal to the block is insufficient. Keep the row in an area that remains within active simulation range while you expect growth. When a stalk grows, break the upper cane and leave the bottom planted block in place. Pick up the drops and store them for paper or another intended recipe. Return to the row later and harvest regrown upper sections. Farming tips Natural growth stops at three blocks tall, so harvest the upper stalk when convenient. Java Edition does not allow bone meal on sugar cane, and lighting does not speed its growth. Repeat, collect and use Repeatable while the planted bottom cane remains and the farm area is active; harvests do not uproot the crop.
Common mistakes Planting too far from water: place cane on a block directly adjacent to water at the planting level. Breaking the bottom block: leave it planted to preserve regrowth. Expecting bone meal or extra lighting to speed growth in Java: wait for natural growth instead. When to stop or switch Stop harvesting when your paper or crafting stock is sufficient; leave the base cane planted for the next cycle.
