CRAFTING & INGREDIENTS

Clay gathering and processing

Overworld — lush-cave pond floors, rivers and shallow lakes.

Mine clay blocks from water-side deposits and choose the processing route that matches the project. Clay balls smelt into bricks; combining balls back into clay blocks first lets you smelt terracotta. Silk Touch preserves clay blocks, while Fortune does not increase clay drops.

GET STARTED

How to craft

Before you craft

  • Shovel recommended for gathering.
  • Regular furnace and fuel for bricks or terracotta.
  • Inventory space for clay and processed blocks.
  1. Find a lush-cave pond floor, river or shallow lake with exposed clay blocks.
  2. Mine the blocks and collect the clay balls.
  3. For bricks, smelt clay balls in a regular furnace with fuel.
  4. Collect the brick output and keep it separate from unprocessed clay.
  5. For terracotta, craft clay balls back into clay blocks before smelting those blocks.
  6. Collect terracotta and use it in the intended build or recipe.
  7. Repeat the gathering trip if the project needs more clay.

Crafting tips

  • A Silk Touch tool preserves the clay block when you want to move or store it intact.
  • Fortune does not improve clay drops, so use the tool that suits your block-versus-ball goal.

Repeat, collect and use

Repeatable as a gathering trip, but each deposit is finite.

Common mistakes

  • Smelting clay balls while aiming for terracotta: recraft them into clay blocks first.
  • Expecting Fortune to increase clay drops: it does not; gather more blocks instead.
  • Using the wrong furnace process: use a regular furnace for the described smelting.

When to stop or switch

Stop when the required bricks or terracotta are ready; collect more clay only if the project needs another batch.
