Before you go

Farming steps

  1. Lead chickens into a compact pen with seeds, or hatch a starter bird from an egg if needed.
  2. Place a hopper beneath the area where eggs land and connect it to a chest.
  3. Keep the enclosure secure; chicks can pass through openings smaller than a full block.
  4. Leave the chickens alive in a loaded chunk so adults can lay eggs.
  5. Check the chest and collect eggs for recipes or a controlled hatching batch.
  6. If you want more birds, breed chickens with seeds or throw selected eggs; hatching is chance-based.
  7. Keep hatching separate from passive collection and limit flock size to avoid crowding.

Repeat, collect and use

Repeatable while adult chickens remain in a loaded chunk; egg laying is periodic and hatching from eggs is chance-based.

Common mistakes

  • Using a pen with small gaps: chicks can escape through openings smaller than a full block.
  • Hatching every collected egg automatically: separate storage from controlled flock expansion.
  • Expecting every thrown egg to hatch: keep breeding seeds or enough collected eggs for repeated attempts.

When to stop or switch

Stop collecting when your recipe stock is sufficient; keep a small flock for continued eggs and controlled renewal.
