Collect and Sort Crop Seeds

Keep reliable seed reserves so useful crops can be replanted instead of relying on random seed results.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

A tended garden beside a Bird Cage and storage for seeds and produce.

In DST, a caged bird can turn crop produce into seeds for that crop. Reserve some seed before cooking or eating each harvest, and sort seeds by crop and season before planting.

How to farm

Before you go

  • Bird Cage with a bird
  • Harvested crop produce
  • Storage space to keep seed types distinct
  1. Harvest mature crops and separate a portion of each useful crop from the food pile.
  2. Save any seeds already returned by the harvest.
  3. Feed surplus produce to the caged bird to obtain seeds for that crop.
  4. Move the resulting seeds into labeled or otherwise separated storage.
  5. Check the crop’s seasonal suitability and nutrient needs before committing a large seed batch.
  6. Plant from the reserve and replenish it after the next harvest.

Farming tips

  • Keep a buffer of each crop you rely on before feeding produce to the bird.
  • Use the Gardeneer Hat to inspect crop requirements when available, then sort seeds accordingly.

Repeat, collect and use

Repeat with each harvest while you have produce to convert; the bird exchange can sustain a seed loop but does not create food from nothing.

Common mistakes

  • Cooking the whole harvest first: reserve seed or produce for the bird before using the rest.
  • Mixing seed types: separate them so planting choices remain deliberate.
  • Planting a large reserve in an unsuitable season: verify conditions with a small grouping first.

When to stop or switch

Stop converting a crop when its seed reserve is sufficient or its season and nutrient demands make another planting inefficient.
