Winter Cactus Harvest in Reign of Giants

Reign of Giants Cacti remain harvestable through winter and supply Cactus Flesh when farm plots cannot grow.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

Desert biome in Don’t Starve: Reign of Giants; cacti are natural plants and cannot be shovel-transplanted.

In Reign of Giants, use Desert Cacti as a seasonal food route that continues during winter. Cacti occur in the Desert biome and cannot be dug up, so the farm is a repeat harvest circuit rather than a transplanted bed. Harvesting costs health, which armor reduces, and the plants regrow after several days; the wiki gives four days normally and three in spring. Cactus Flesh is available in any season, while the flower is a summer-only drop. Keep a reserve of protection and health before harvesting, then collect from known cactus patches on return visits. This guide is RoG-specific: Cactus is not part of the original base game. It adds a named desert plant target to the existing farm and berry routes without promising that a planted plot will function in winter.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • Reign of Giants DLC enabled.
  • Armor and enough health to absorb harvest damage.
  • A map route to known Desert biome cactus patches.
  1. Confirm RoG is enabled and identify the Desert biome on your world map.
  2. Prepare armor and heal before approaching a cactus, since harvesting it damages the player.
  3. Harvest Cactus Flesh from the plant; do not attempt to dig up the cactus for a camp garden.
  4. Collect the flesh and keep summer flowers separate if the seasonal flower drop is your target.
  5. Return to camp and cook or store the flesh as part of winter food planning.
  6. Mark or remember the harvested patch and return after the plants have had time to regrow.
  7. Use the normal four-day regrowth expectation, with faster three-day regrowth noted for spring, rather than visiting an empty patch repeatedly.
  8. Repeat the route in winter when crop plots cannot advance and you need another plant-based food source.

Farming tips

  • Armor reduces the health cost of harvesting; prepare for damage rather than assuming a cactus is safe to pick.
  • Winter does not stop cactus regrowth, which is why this is useful when farm crops are stalled.

Repeat, collect and use

Repeat the desert circuit after regrowth; cactus is renewable over time but not immediately replenished after picking.

Common mistakes

  • Using this route in base Don’t Starve without Reign of Giants enabled.
  • Trying to transplant cacti with a shovel; they cannot be dug up.
  • Harvesting without armor or health preparation, then losing the food run to cactus damage.

When to stop or switch

Pause after harvesting the available patch and return only after enough days have passed for regrowth or when another food route is needed.
