Step into Nightmare for better drops

Nightmare offers a higher loot tier for players with access to Lost Eternia Shards and a build ready for the greater challenge.

PC / Global, original Dungeon Defenders edition
WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

A Lost Eternia Shards map or eligible Nightmare mission in the original Dungeon Defenders PC edition.

Nightmare difficulty raises loot quality, but it also asks more from your defenses. It requires Lost Eternia Shards DLC hosting in the original PC game. Treat entry as a progression step: start on a map you can already manage, assess whether your defenses survive, and move upward only after stable clears. Do not assume every Nightmare map is equally suitable for your current gear.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • Access to and hosting capability for Lost Eternia Shards DLC content.
  • A defense build and heroes suitable for the selected Nightmare map.
  • Enough inventory space to assess new equipment drops.
  1. Confirm Nightmare is available in the mission selector and that the required DLC content is accessible.
  2. Choose an earlier or otherwise manageable map rather than jumping to the hardest route.
  3. Set the Nightmare difficulty and use the build phase to inspect lanes and cover crystal approaches.
  4. Start combat and watch for early signs that defenses cannot withstand the increased challenge.
  5. Repair and reinforce only when the wave pressure allows; prioritize surviving over chasing drops.
  6. Complete the mission if the build holds, then compare loot with existing equipment.
  7. Repeat successful clears or return to a lower difficulty or map to strengthen the roster.

Farming tips

  • Nightmare’s better loot quality does not make a failed run a good farm; stable clears provide the useful comparison.
  • Check access and hosting requirements before planning around DLC Nightmare.

Repeat, collect and use

Repeat only on maps your current build can complete; loot varies and no specific item is guaranteed.

Common mistakes

  • Trying Nightmare without the required DLC access: confirm the content is available first.
  • Jumping to an advanced map: begin with a manageable route and progress gradually.
  • Keeping poor stat rolls for difficulty alone: compare the item’s actual usefulness.

When to stop or switch

Drop back to a safer route if crystals are repeatedly threatened, and resume Nightmare when gear or build improvements make clears stable.
