CRAFTING & INGREDIENTS

Sand gathering and glass

Overworld — desert or beach; furnace processing at your base.

Gather exposed sand from deserts or beaches, then smelt it in a regular furnace when glass is the goal. Sand falls when unsupported, so clear exposed layers safely and keep the raw blocks separate from processed glass.

Match the version that generated your chunks. Biome maps do not show exact ore blocks.

GET STARTED

How to craft

Before you craft

  • Shovel recommended.
  • Regular furnace and fuel for glass.
  • Inventory space for sand and glass.
  1. Travel to a desert or beach and identify exposed sand deposits.
  2. Work across the surface with a shovel, collecting the dropped sand.
  3. Clear layers from above rather than digging beneath unsupported overhangs.
  4. Carry the sand home and place it in the regular furnace input with fuel below.
  5. Collect glass from the output when smelting completes.
  6. Craft panes if your build calls for panes rather than glass blocks.
  7. Repeat gathering and smelting until the project quantity is covered.

Crafting tips

  • Sand falls when support is removed; watch the area above your dig before clearing a lower block.
  • A blast furnace cannot replace the regular furnace for glass production.

Repeat, collect and use

Repeatable as a gathering trip, but each deposit is finite; smelting consumes collected sand.

Common mistakes

  • Digging under a sand overhang: clear exposed layers from the top to avoid falling sand.
  • Using a blast furnace for glass: process sand in a regular furnace.
  • Crafting panes before confirming the build needs them: retain glass blocks if those are the required output.

When to stop or switch

Stop when you have the glass or sand quantity needed for the project; return for another load if construction continues.

Limited renewable alternative

Wandering Trader

  • Emeralds and a trader offering sand.
  1. Inspect the trader's stock.
  2. Buy sand if offered.
  • The stock is limited; this is an alternative to large-scale digging.
