Where to farm
Soul Cairn for Soul Husks; Valerica’s Study at Castle Volkihar for conversion after returning from the Soul Cairn.
Soul Husks found in the Soul Cairn can be brought to Valerica for conversion into Soul Husk Extract. This route is available only after the relevant Dawnguard story access, and its supply depends on collecting husks during your Soul Cairn activity. Gather husks as you explore, then make a return visit to process them when you want the extract for alchemy.
Own Dawnguard and reach the Soul Cairn through its story progression.
Collect Soul Husks during Soul Cairn exploration.
Return to Castle Volkihar and have access to Valerica.
Progress through Dawnguard until the Soul Cairn becomes accessible.
While in the Soul Cairn, collect Soul Husks you encounter during objectives and exploration.
Return to Castle Volkihar after the Soul Cairn visit and locate Valerica in her study.
Speak with Valerica and use the available option to have her prepare Soul Husk Extract.
Collect the extract and store it with your alchemy ingredients.
Use the extract in a recipe only after checking its effects at an Alchemy Lab.
Repeat the hand-in when you gather another set of Soul Husks.
Farming tips
Collect husks while already completing Soul Cairn objectives so the conversion does not require a separate gathering trip.
Keep track of whether you need raw Soul Husks or the processed extract before turning in your supply.
Repeat, collect and use
The conversion can be repeated when you bring more Soul Husks, but the supply is limited by what you collect in the Soul Cairn. It is not an unlimited renewable farm.
Common mistakes
Do not expect Valerica to provide extract before you have access to her and the Soul Cairn progression.
Do not treat Soul Husk Extract as a guaranteed drop from every Soul Husk; it is a conversion performed by Valerica.
Do not spend all husks in the conversion if your current objective specifically needs the raw ingredient.
When to stop or switch
Stop converting once you have the extract stock needed for your planned alchemy use, or when further Soul Cairn collection is no longer part of your progression.
