Plant Spoiled Fruit Seeds

A seed that is already in your inventory can still start an edible plant after it spoils, letting you use existing planting stock instead of discarding it.

PC / Global, final release
WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

At your base, in an Indoor Growbed or Plant Pot suitable for the edible plant represented by the seed.

In the original Subnautica campaign, spoilage does not prevent an edible plant seed from being planted. This is a small salvage method, not a way to turn spoiled fruit into seeds or produce replacement planting stock. First confirm that you have a seed item; spoiled fruit by itself is not a seed. Plant the seed in a suitable indoor planter, then collect the plant’s edible output when it is ready. Use that harvest as food or store it for later. The research supports planting spoiled seeds, but does not establish that harvesting the crop returns seeds, so treat each seed as limited planting stock.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • An edible fruiting-plant seed already in inventory or storage; it can be spoiled.
  • An Indoor Growbed or Plant Pot that accepts that plant.
  • A base where you can access and harvest the planter.
  1. Check your inventory and storage for a seed item from an edible fruiting plant.
  2. Keep the seed if it is spoiled; do not discard it just because it has spoiled.
  3. Do not search the spoiled fruit itself for a seed unless the game presents a separate seed item.
  4. Take the seed to a base with an appropriate Indoor Growbed or Plant Pot.
  5. Place it in the planter and verify that the game accepts it for planting.
  6. When the plant is ready, collect its edible output and use it as food or store it.
  7. If you need more plants, obtain additional seeds through a known seed-collection method; do not rely on this harvest to replenish them.

Farming tips

  • Keep seeds in a clearly separated storage slot so they are not mistaken for spoiled food.
  • Plant limited seeds near a base you visit often, making the crop easy to check and harvest.

Repeat, collect and use

Planting works with a spoiled seed already in hand, but it is a limited recovery method. Repeat only when you obtain another seed; the available research does not establish seed return from harvesting the plant.

Common mistakes

  • Treating spoiled fruit as if it automatically contains a separate seed: plant only a seed item you actually have.
  • Discarding a seed because it is spoiled: spoilage does not prevent planting.
  • Counting on the crop to provide replacement seeds: collect its edible output, and obtain planting stock separately if you want to expand.

When to stop or switch

Stop once the seed has been planted and its edible output is being used. If you need a larger or repeatable seed supply, switch to a seed-collection method supported for that plant.
