Colony Operations

Food Diversity

A selection of food types supports beaver well-being and makes the colony less dependent on a single crop chain.

PC / Global, 1.0 released March 12, 2026
WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

Separate compatible crop plots and food processors on reachable paths in the same district or across a planned district transfer.

Build diversity by matching crop choices to the faction’s farmhouses and taking ingredient crops through their required processors. Directly edible crops can go to food storage; crops such as potatoes or wheat need further preparation for the finished foods described here. Keep produced foods reachable by beavers, and expand only when field, water, and processing capacity can support the added chain.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • Staffed farmhouses compatible with the selected crop types.
  • Irrigated blocks in each farmhouse’s work area.
  • Grills, Gristmills, or Bakeries for crops that require processing.
  • Accessible food storage for finished foods.
  1. Check the active faction and the crop options available at its staffed farmhouses.
  2. Choose a directly edible crop or a distinct processed-food chain that the colony can support.
  3. Mark irrigated blocks within the relevant farmhouse range and verify farmers can reach their work.
  4. For ingredient crops, place and staff the matching processor and provide input and output storage.
  5. Route finished foods into accessible storage near the population that will consume them.
  6. Inspect inventories and building status to find bottlenecks before planting more of the same crop.
  7. Add another food type when water, labor, and processing supply can sustain the new chain.

Farming tips

  • Food diversity depends on finished foods being available; raw ingredients alone do not complete every food chain.
  • Keep each ingredient crop connected to the processor that uses it, with storage space for the result.

Repeat, collect and use

Maintain each crop and processing loop as a recurring supply. The mix can change with faction compatibility, water availability, and the colony’s current food needs.

Common mistakes

  • Planting crops that the selected farmhouse cannot grow: inspect its crop choices before assigning field blocks.
  • Counting wheat or unprocessed potatoes as finished food: use a Mill and Bakery for wheat or a Grill for potatoes.
  • Adding varieties without output routes: ensure finished food can reach storage that beavers can access.

When to stop or switch

Stop adding another chain when its food is accumulating unused or water and staffing are strained; expand the types that the colony can process and consume reliably.
