Water and fertilizer affect whether suitable farm variants can sustain crop growth and fertility. Matching each input to a farm that accepts it avoids investing in a supply line the building cannot use.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM
Where to farm
A farm’s supported water and fertilizer inputs, connected to an appropriate water source and fertilizer supply.
Check the farm variant and its crop status first, then provide the inputs that variant supports. A Basic Farm relies on rainfall and cannot use fertilizer; other variants can support external inputs. Fertility and crop output should be checked over a growth cycle before scaling supply.
A farm variant that accepts the external input you plan to provide.
A water source and delivery route when irrigation is required.
Fertilizer production or stock and a route when fertility restoration is needed.
Inspect the farm type, crop status and input connections to identify the current constraint.
Check whether the selected farm accepts external water or fertilizer before building its supply route.
For a water constraint, connect an appropriate water supply to a farm variant that supports it.
For a fertility constraint, connect fertilizer supply to a compatible variant and set its target as needed.
Keep the input routes and farm output connected to their respective destinations.
Observe the farm through a growth cycle and review status, fertility and harvested output.
Adjust delivery or crop planning based on the observed result rather than expanding inputs blindly.
Farming tips
The Basic Farm is rainfall-dependent and cannot use fertilizer; changing the farm type is necessary for those inputs.
Fertilizer types delivered together mix proportionally, so avoid sending an uncontrolled blend if you need a particular composition.
Repeat, collect and use
Water and fertilizer delivery can be ongoing while the farm operates. Replenish fertilizer as crop growth uses fertility; the farm’s target and supported inputs determine the required supply.
Common mistakes
Trying to fertilize a Basic Farm: use a compatible farm variant.
Building an input chain without checking the farm status: identify whether water or fertility is actually limiting.
Treating fertilizer mixes as separate layers: delivered types combine proportionally, so control the incoming mix.
When to stop or switch
Reduce or redirect an input when the farm reaches its intended operating condition or the harvest no longer benefits from the current supply; switch variants if the building cannot accept the needed input.
