Care for a Rain-Fed Garden Plot

A rain-fed plot can reduce the need to carry water to your garden, but only while rain reaches the plants. Use this routine to check hydration and keep the crop productive without relying on a fixed weather schedule.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

Suitable, relatively flat ground near a shelter or base, with the plot exposed to rain and reachable along a safe route.

Prepare a garden plot on suitable ground, plant seeds, then let rain hydrate exposed plants when conditions allow. Rain is an alternative to watering, not a guarantee: inspect the plants in-game and bring water if they need it. This method suits a small base garden in the current base game; server weather and conditions can differ.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • Hoe, pickaxe, or shovel to prepare the plot
  • Seeds for planting
  • Water container as a backup for dry conditions
  1. Choose suitable ground where plants can receive rain and you can approach without crossing an exposed route.
  2. Use a farming tool to prepare the garden plot.
  3. Plant seeds in the prepared patches.
  4. Leave the plants exposed to weather rather than placing them under a roof or cover.
  5. On a later visit, inspect the plants’ in-game condition instead of assuming rain has watered every patch.
  6. If a plant needs hydration, water it from a container when it is safe to do so.
  7. Return when the crop is ready, harvest the produce, and collect seeds from suitable produce with a knife if you want to replant.

Farming tips

  • Place the plot along a route you already use, so checking it does not require a special trip.
  • Keep a water container available: rain can help, but weather and plant condition vary.

Repeat, collect and use

Repeat the check-and-harvest loop as needed: inspect the plot, water plants that need it, harvest ready produce, and reserve seeds for another planting. The garden is repeatable, but rain-fed hydration depends on conditions and is not guaranteed.

Common mistakes

  • Treating rain as guaranteed irrigation: check plant condition and water when needed.
  • Sheltering plants from rain: keep the plot exposed if you want rainfall to hydrate it.
  • Waiting for a fixed number of minutes before checking: use the crop’s condition in-game because timing varies.
  • Harvesting every edible item before saving seed: reserve suitable produce for replanting.

When to stop or switch

Stop tending the plot when you have enough food and seed for the next cycle. If it stays dry, becomes unsafe to reach, or needs more attention than it is worth, water it from a container or switch to another food source.
