Thunder Eggs provide a distinct weather-triggered route to Opal, a rare crafting material beyond routine ore-node mining.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM
Where to farm
Search the island after a thunderstorm for a Thunder Egg; use a pickaxe to break it when you specifically need Opal.
When Opal is the missing material, watch for a Thunder Egg rather than making another ordinary ore circuit. The Dinkum wiki lists Opal as obtainable from Thunder Eggs, and the indexed item references describe breaking a Thunder Egg to obtain four Opals. The egg is a rare weather-linked find, so this is an opportunistic resource route, not a predictable daily production rate. Keep an intact egg until you know whether its intact sale or decorative use is more valuable to your plans; breaking it commits the item to its Opal output. Use a pickaxe to open the egg only when Opal is the actual target, then store the gems for the advanced tools or equipment that need them. Mining and Deep Mine sources are alternate Opal routes, but they are not the focus here.
A Thunder Egg found during the weather-linked event.
A pickaxe to break the egg.
A crafting or equipment plan that calls for Opal.
Check the weather and listen or look for the thunderstorm activity associated with Thunder Eggs.
Search the island for the resulting egg rather than mining ordinary ore nodes for this route.
Pick up and store the intact Thunder Egg until you have compared its value to your Opal need.
Check your crafting plan and confirm Opal is the material you need before breaking the collectible.
Use a pickaxe on the egg to release its Opal contents; indexed references list four Opals from a broken egg.
Move the Opals into protected storage and retain them for the advanced craft or tool you are pursuing.
If you do not need Opal, leave the Thunder Egg intact for its alternative uses or sale decision.
Resume searching after later storms if another Opal batch is required; do not budget a guaranteed egg per storm.
Farming tips
Breaking an intact Thunder Egg is irreversible; choose between Opal and the intact item before striking it.
Opal also has other sources, including Deep Mine and mining routes; use the Thunder Egg route only when you find one or specifically want its output.
Repeat, collect and use
Repeat opportunistically when another Thunder Egg appears after storm activity. The egg spawn is rare and should not be treated as a fixed-yield renewable timer.
Common mistakes
Breaking a Thunder Egg before checking whether Opal is more useful than the intact egg.
Assuming every storm guarantees an egg or a fixed island spawn.
Mistaking the four-Opal result for a regular ore-node yield.
When to stop or switch
Stop once you have enough Opal for the planned craft; keep later Thunder Eggs intact unless more gems are required.
