Farm inputs and automation

Crop Waste and Peat

Recycling crop waste into Peat can reduce seed replacement and improve crop output, making garden byproducts useful inputs.

PC / Global, base game plus DLCs; base-game scope
WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

Kitchen Garden harvests, a Compost Heap, and garden beds; the Shepherd is an alternative Peat source.

Harvests can leave crop waste, which belongs in the garden’s composting loop rather than a general storage pile. The recorded Peat method uses crop waste at a Compost Heap; Peat can also be purchased from the Shepherd. Apply it before sowing to improve seed and crop yield and reduce seed loss. Check the station recipe if your unlocked setup presents a different processing option.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • Harvest crops that produce crop waste.
  • Build or unlock a Compost Heap and its relevant recipe.
  • Have crop waste for processing, or money to buy Peat from the Shepherd.
  • An empty bed if you intend to use the resulting Peat.
  1. Harvest ripe crops and collect the crop waste separately from food and seeds.
  2. Check the Compost Heap’s available recipe and place the required crop waste into it.
  3. Collect Peat when the heap completes its processing interaction.
  4. If you need Peat sooner and can afford it, check the Shepherd’s stock instead.
  5. Carry Peat back to an empty Kitchen Garden bed.
  6. Apply it before planting the next crop.
  7. After harvest, reserve seeds and return new crop waste to the heap to continue the loop.

Farming tips

  • Peat is a useful early yield input when seed loss is forcing repeated purchases.
  • Keep the compost recipe display as your authority for inputs; do not feed valuable harvests into a recipe without checking it.

Repeat, collect and use

The crop-waste loop is repeatable when harvests provide waste and the heap recipe is available; buying from the Shepherd depends on stock and funds.

Common mistakes

  • Discarding all crop waste: retain enough for the compost loop.
  • Applying Peat after sowing: prepare the bed before planting.
  • Assuming crop waste yields unlimited Peat: harvests and recipe inputs constrain production.

When to stop or switch

Pause composting when your Peat reserve covers the next planned beds; resume when seed replacement or crop yield becomes a constraint.
