WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

Java Edition — swamp or mangrove swamp at Y=51–69, or a confirmed slime chunk below Y=40.

Java slimeballs come from killing the smallest slimes. Choose a swamp route for less excavation but more dependence on light and moon conditions, or use a confirmed slime chunk below Y=40 for a purpose-built farm. A chunk's location depends on the world seed.

How to farm

Before you go

  • Combat gear and a safe way to collect drops.
  • For a swamp route: access to a swamp and suitable moon and light conditions.
  • For a chunk farm: seed-specific slime-chunk location and an excavated spawning area.
  • Stay within the applicable player spawn range.
  1. Choose the swamp route or determine a slime chunk for your world seed.
  2. For a swamp, hunt within Y=51–69 where light is 7 or lower; a full moon is more favorable and a new moon prevents swamp slime spawning.
  3. For a chunk farm, excavate valid spawning space below Y=40 in the confirmed chunk.
  4. If using a chunk room, consider reducing nearby cave spawn competition and provide a collection area beneath the kill zone.
  5. Stay within player range while waiting for spawns; natural spawning does not operate as a guaranteed-rate machine.
  6. Fight slimes and continue killing each split stage until the smallest slimes are defeated.
  7. Collect slimeballs and repeat until the intended crafting supply is ready.

Farming tips

  • The swamp route avoids excavating a chunk room but depends on moon and light conditions.
  • Slime chunks vary by seed; confirm the chunk before investing in a large excavation.

Repeat, collect and use

Repeatable while conditions and player proximity allow spawning; slimeballs require killing the smallest split stage.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping at a large slime: continue through its split stages to target the small slimes.
  • Using swamp rules for a chunk farm: chunk slimes spawn below Y=40 regardless of light or weather.
  • Building in an unconfirmed chunk: identify the seed-specific location before excavation.

When to stop or switch

Stop when your slimeball stock meets the recipe need; switch routes if swamp conditions are poor and you have a confirmed chunk.
