Forest caves beneath the starting islands are a useful first underground route. They contain rocks and ore-bearing rocks that can be mined, along with side areas and objects worth investigating. Bring a Pickaxe to collect Copper and Stone, plus a weapon, food and light so exploration is manageable. Follow the corridors you uncover, then return to the settlement to process ore and store loot. The amount and layout vary, so treat each cave as a route to explore rather than a fixed sequence of rooms.
Cave exploration can be repeated for more ore and materials; room layouts and useful finds vary by cave.
Leave when your planned Copper supply is collected, your inventory is crowded, or your combat supplies are running low.
