Haygrass

A renewable feed crop that can reduce reliance on grazing when livestock need stored food.

PC / Global, current base game; DLC optional
WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

A protected growing zone near a livestock pen and a stockpile reachable by the animals that need feed.

Haygrass produces animal feed rather than a human staple. Grow it near the animals’ pen or feed storage to limit hauling, but do not let livestock eat the crop before harvest. Store the hay where the animals can reach it when pasture is unavailable. You can also process hay into kibble if your colony has the relevant production setup, but that is a separate step and kibble is not a mood-neutral human food.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • A viable zone set to Haygrass.
  • A Grow-assigned colonist and conditions suitable for the local outdoor season.
  • A barrier or animal allowed-area setup that keeps livestock out of the standing crop.
  • Feed storage accessible to the intended animals.
  1. Place a growing zone near the pen or feed stockpile and select Haygrass.
  2. Keep livestock away from the zone with fencing or an animal area restriction; animals eat many mature plants.
  3. Assign Grow work and check the crop’s conditions and local season before relying on a large field.
  4. Let plants mature, then harvest them with a Grow-assigned colonist.
  5. Haul hay into a stockpile accessible to the animals, and check that the designated stockpile accepts the feed.
  6. If you need kibble, route some hay through the appropriate production workflow; preserve enough hay for direct feeding.

Farming tips

  • Grow close to the animals’ feeding area so hauling hay does not consume more labor than necessary.
  • Keep a separate human-food reserve; Haygrass alone does not serve colonists as ordinary meals.

Repeat, collect and use

Haygrass is renewable through repeated sowing and harvests while conditions permit. Outdoor production is limited by the local growing period, so keep stored feed for seasons when the field is dormant.

Common mistakes

  • Allowing animals into the crop: restrict access until after harvest to avoid losing the standing feed.
  • Putting hay in a stockpile the animals cannot reach: confirm stockpile permissions and access routes.
  • Treating hay as ordinary human food: use it for livestock or process it into a suitable product.

When to stop or switch

Stop sowing when feed reserves are adequate or the season cannot support maturation; resume when stored hay is running low and conditions return.
