Hellstone bars unlock useful pre-Hardmode equipment. Plan the Underworld trip around the lava released as you mine.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM
Where to farm
The Underworld’s ash formations, including clusters near lava pools.
Search Underworld ash formations for Hellstone, mine it with a sufficiently strong pickaxe, then smelt it at a Hellforge with Obsidian. Obsidian Skin protection helps manage the trip, but you still need to watch the terrain and keep an exit open. Work from stable ground and bring blocks to manage gaps or build platforms. Gather for a particular Molten-tier item or recipe rather than staying longer than necessary.
Vertical layer diagram places early and Hardmode ores in Underground/Cavern bands, Chlorophyte in Underground Jungle cavern, and Hellstone in Underworld. Not to scale; no fixed coordinates.
GET STARTED
How to farm
Before you go
A Nightmare or Deathbringer Pickaxe, or another pickaxe with sufficient mining power.
Obsidian Skin protection or a plan to avoid and contain released lava.
A Hellforge and Obsidian for processing.
Prepare Obsidian Skin protection if available, along with blocks or platforms for terrain control.
Enter the Underworld and look for ash formations with visible Hellstone.
Clear a small work area and confirm a route back to solid ground.
Mine exposed Hellstone with the required pickaxe while watching where lava flows.
Contain or avoid lava between clusters and keep the escape route open.
Return when your inventory is full or your protection is running low.
At a Hellforge, smelt Hellstone with Obsidian into bars and craft the planned item.
Farming tips
Approach from a stable side so released lava is less likely to pour directly onto you.
Bring blocks to make temporary platforms and close gaps on your route.
Repeat, collect and use
Repeat while accessible deposits remain. Each cluster is finite; search other ash formations after nearby veins are exhausted.
Common mistakes
Mining beneath a lava pool; choose a position where released lava cannot fall directly onto you.
Taking a pickaxe without enough mining power; check your tool before traveling.
Forgetting Obsidian; bring it to make Hellstone bars.
When to stop or switch
Stop once you have enough bars for the intended item. Return when another specific craft needs Hellstone.
