Water and Drought Management

Irrigation and Soil

Irrigated farmland keeps crop blocks viable through changing water conditions and helps protect the harvest from drought.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

Suitable low terrain within a staffed farmhouse’s range, supplied by river flow or a constructed irrigation route.

Crop planting depends on suitable blocks, farmhouse reach, and water. Survey low terrain and the flow of map water before marking a large field. Use the map’s water-management structures to deliver irrigation, then verify the blocks are shown as suitable before assigning crops. A surface reservoir and a supply of drinkable Water are separate systems.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • A crop-compatible staffed farmhouse covering the intended blocks.
  • A water source and map-appropriate irrigation structures such as channels, levees, dams, or controlled outlets.
  • Suitable terrain and a clear route for water to reach the crop blocks.
  1. Inspect elevations around the field and identify where water can flow without blocking essential routes.
  2. Choose a field location inside the farmhouse’s displayed work area.
  3. Build or adjust channels, levees, or water-retaining structures to guide map water toward the field.
  4. Check the terrain and crop-block status in-game; mark crops only on suitable, irrigated blocks.
  5. Observe the downstream flow after water reaches the field and adjust structures if they divert needed supply.
  6. Before drought, check that the irrigation route still connects to the retained water source.
  7. Reassess the field after changing gates or channels, since an altered flow can change which blocks remain watered.

Farming tips

  • Plant Crops marks suitable blocks but does not deliver water; solve water access separately.
  • Avoid expanding farmland past the reserve’s capacity to irrigate it through dry periods.

Repeat, collect and use

This is an ongoing setup and maintenance loop: retain or route water, check field status, adjust the flow, and recheck after droughts or construction changes.

Common mistakes

  • Marking crops outside farmhouse reach or on unsuitable blocks: check the work area and block status first.
  • Assuming a nearby river guarantees irrigation: confirm water actually reaches the field elevation.
  • Redirecting water without checking downstream users: inspect the reservoir and other supply routes after each change.

When to stop or switch

Stop extending irrigation when all planned blocks remain suitable and the reserve still serves other needs; reduce or relocate the field if reliable water cannot reach it.
