Water and Drought Management

Reservoir and Field Irrigation

A retained map-water supply connected to fields can help preserve crop viability when natural flow declines.

PC / Global, 1.0 released March 12, 2026
WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

A constructed retaining area upstream of a crop field, with channels or controlled outlets that reach suitable farmland.

A reservoir stores map water through terrain shaping and controlled discharge; irrigation needs a route from that stored water to crop blocks. Build the route around actual terrain levels, then verify that water reaches the field and remains available through dry conditions. This does not create drinkable Water goods, which require pumping and tank storage.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • A map water source and terrain that can retain water.
  • Retaining walls, dams, or controllable discharge structures suited to the map.
  • A staffed compatible farmhouse and suitable field blocks downstream.
  • A clear irrigation route from retained water to the field.
  1. Inspect elevations from the source to the planned field so the route can carry water to the target blocks.
  2. Build retaining structures to hold map water and leave a controlled route toward irrigation.
  3. Direct water through channels or terrain openings toward the field.
  4. Check in-game that crop blocks become suitable and irrigated before assigning crops.
  5. Observe what happens downstream and adjust outlets if the field or other users lose needed flow.
  6. Before drought, verify the retained level and the full route to the field.
  7. Recheck irrigation after adjusting structures or when water levels change.

Farming tips

  • A reservoir stores map water; it does not directly stock drinkable Water for beavers.
  • Confirm field status after construction instead of assuming that a nearby reservoir reaches the crops.

Repeat, collect and use

Retain water during suitable flow, direct it to fields, and inspect the reserve and irrigation route before dry periods. The exact design depends on the map’s terrain and water source.

Common mistakes

  • Building a basin without an outlet to the crops: check the complete route to the field.
  • Assuming nearby retained water irrigates every elevation: verify crop-block status and adjust the route.
  • Using reservoir water as a substitute for Water Tanks: pump map water into tanks when drinkable Water is needed.

When to stop or switch

Stop enlarging the reservoir or field once the current route maintains suitable crop blocks and leaves enough water for other users; reduce field area if the source cannot support it.
