WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

Black Gulch, along the poison pools containing Coal Tar monsters, reached from a Black Gulch bonfire.

Coal Tars in Black Gulch can drop Titanite Chunks in Scholar. They emerge from the poison pools along the area’s ledges, so the run depends on controlling poison buildup and fighting each target on stable ground. Clear only the statues that interfere with movement or repeatedly poison the route, defeat the Coal Tars you can handle, collect drops, and return to a nearby bonfire to reset them. Chunks reinforce standard equipment at a blacksmith. The drops are random, and killing the same enemies repeatedly may eventually despawn them until a stronger reset.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • Reach Black Gulch and activate a nearby bonfire.
  • Carry poison cures or equipment that helps manage poison buildup.
  • Optional item-discovery equipment and a weapon that can safely hit the Coal Tars.
  1. Rest at the bonfire and approach the pool route carefully, watching for poison statues and ledges.
  2. Break statues that directly obstruct your movement or repeatedly interrupt the planned path.
  3. Engage a Coal Tar as it emerges from a pool; keep enough room to retreat from poison buildup.
  4. Defeat the target, then collect any Titanite Chunk before moving to the next pool.
  5. Use a poison cure when needed and avoid lingering in the mist while checking drops.
  6. Return to the bonfire to restore the route and repeat while the Coal Tars respawn.
  7. Take the collected Chunks to a blacksmith for standard equipment upgrades.

Farming tips

  • A ranged attack can help initiate a fight from a more controlled position, but keep footing and poison exposure in view.
  • Item-discovery gear can assist with random drops; prioritize poison management if the run is not stable.

Repeat, collect and use

Coal Tars can be killed repeatedly while they respawn normally. If repeated kills cause them to stop returning, a Bonfire Ascetic can restore eligible enemies at the cost of permanently higher local intensity.

Common mistakes

  • Running through poison while trying to clear every statue; remove only route-blocking hazards and cure buildup before it overwhelms you.
  • Assuming a kill guarantees a Chunk; the drop is random, so repeat safely and track the stock you actually collect.
  • Using an Ascetic without considering the increased area difficulty; change to a different farm if the reset cost outweighs the need.

When to stop or switch

Stop after reaching the required Chunk count or once poison and enemy pressure make each additional run less reliable than another source.
