WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

A landable planet scanned with a Detailed Surface Scanner; select a Planetary Mining Location in the planetary results.

The September Rhino update changed the Detailed Surface Scanner so it can reveal Planetary Mining Locations on planets. This is the reliable first stage of a surface-mining trip: map a suitable world, inspect its scan results and select a location marker. The marker identifies a place to investigate, not a promise of a particular commodity or deposit yield. Deposit scanning and extraction require the Rhino tools and in-game prompts at the site. This guide stops at the supported discovery and selection stage rather than inventing a location-to-market route.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • PC Live with the Rhino surface-mining update.
  • A ship equipped with a Detailed Surface Scanner.
  • A landable planet and access to a Vodel Rhino SRV for the eventual mining run.
  1. Choose a landable planet and approach it using the system map and navigation panel.
  2. Fire the Detailed Surface Scanner probes at the planet and complete the mapping scan.
  3. Open the planetary scan results and find the Planetary Mining Locations detected by the DSS.
  4. Select one location marker and set it as the navigation target.
  5. Plot a route to the selected location and descend toward the surface using the normal landing controls.
  6. Once landed, deploy the Rhino and check its live interface for deposit-scanning options before beginning extraction.
  7. Record which marker you visited and what the Rhino's scan and cargo interfaces actually report.

Farming tips

  • A location marker is not a deposit assay; do not infer commodity identity or quantity from it alone.
  • The update also fixed an issue with planetary resources missing from the FSS info panel, but use the DSS results for location detection.

Repeat, collect and use

Repeat the DSS scan and location selection for each new planet or additional site you want to inspect. Planetary Mining Locations are places to visit, not a consumable item; site contents and recovery behavior can vary.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the marker as a guaranteed high-value deposit; inspect the deposits with the Rhino.
  • Scanning only with the FSS and expecting it to reveal the location; use the DSS mapping feature.
  • Landing at a marker without a Rhino or a plan to inspect it; prepare the vehicle before committing to the trip.

When to stop or switch

Stop scouting once you have a reachable location and a Rhino equipped to inspect it, or switch planets if the site is not useful in the live vehicle scan.
