Turn Spoiled Food into Composter Fertilizer

A composter converts suitable spoiled food and animal dung into bagged compost that can support crop plots.

PC / Global, Build 42 Early Access
WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

An outdoor composter beside a base farm, away from sleeping areas and fresh food storage.

Spoiled food is not automatically useful, but Build 42 composting can turn appropriate organic waste into a farm input. Keep a composter away from living and food-storage spaces, add eligible rotten material or dung, then wait until the in-game indicator allows collection. This is a slow recycling loop, so plan it alongside crop care rather than treating it as emergency fertilizer. Compost is only useful when you have a plot and packaging to collect it.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • A composter available in the current Build 42 save.
  • Rotten food or animal dung accepted by the composter.
  • Empty sacks for collecting compost.
  • A farm plot where compost can be used.
  1. Check the current Building or Carpentry menu for an available composter recipe and its materials or skill gate.
  2. Build or locate the composter outdoors, away from sleeping rooms and clean food storage.
  3. Sort spoiled food and dung from anything still safe to eat; add only material the composter accepts.
  4. Leave fresh food and unrelated junk out of the compost container.
  5. Check the displayed compost progress on a later visit instead of assuming a fixed conversion time.
  6. When the game shows enough compost for collection, use an empty sack through the composter interaction.
  7. Take the compost bag to a crop and apply it only as the current Agriculture interaction allows.

Farming tips

  • Keep sacks in a farm supply container so ready compost does not sit unused for lack of packaging.
  • Use the in-game progress display as authority if an update changes conversion behavior.

Repeat, collect and use

Repeat as a renewable waste-processing loop while eligible rot or dung and empty sacks are available; compost requires time and is not instant output.

Common mistakes

  • Adding fresh food that could still be eaten; sort waste first and reserve safe food for meals.
  • Using the composter as general storage; keep it for accepted organic inputs and maintain a separate tool container.
  • Assuming compost cures pests or replaces water; apply it only for the plant benefit shown and continue ordinary crop care.

When to stop or switch

Pause additions when the composter is full or you lack sacks and crop use; resume when space, packaging, or a plot is available.
