Treat these as two separate resource farms. Find an initial deposit, gather the sample needed for progression, then use the scanner and Miner logistics to establish the ongoing supply each chain requires.

How to farm
Caterium and Sulfur deposits occur at different world locations. Their scan targets may require progression first, so use the available target and in-game research unlocks to resolve what you can scan.
Before you go
Access to an initial Caterium or Sulfur deposit and the ability to gather a sample.
MAM access for relevant research that enables scanning or recipes.
A Miner and separate belt/storage routes for automated supply.
Explore for an exposed Caterium or Sulfur deposit and collect a sample by hand if its scan target is not available.
Bring the sample to the MAM and complete the relevant resource research shown in game.
Hold V and check whether the resource now appears as a scan target; select it when available.
Follow the compass to a node group and inspect candidate nodes for access and purity.
Place a Miner on the chosen node and route its output to a dedicated buffer or the correct production area.
Repeat the sample and research process for the other resource rather than assuming one unlock covers both.
Keep Caterium and Sulfur on separate labeled routes so later production does not mix inputs.
Farming tips
Use manual collection only to bridge the gap until a permanent Miner line makes sense.
Record which research unlocks which resource scan in your own progression plan.
Repeat, collect and use
Samples and MAM research are progression steps, generally completed once per relevant unlock. Automated mining can run continuously; collect and process the separate outputs as needed, keeping each resource’s route distinct.
Common mistakes
Assuming every advanced resource is immediately scannable can waste searching time; check the scanner menu after researching samples.
Combining Caterium and Sulfur in one buffer obscures shortages and misroutes inputs; keep their logistics separate.
Building a distant automated line before securing a sample may be premature; first confirm the resource and unlock path in game.
When to stop or switch
Stop exploring for a resource once its scan and automated supply are established at the level your recipes require. Return when the factory shows a specific shortage or new research unlocks a useful application.
