Planning plot size and access before construction can prevent a garden from becoming difficult to maintain inside a claimed base.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM
Where to farm
Flat ground inside your claimed flag area, away from walls and other objects that obstruct crop access.
Garden plots can be expanded before construction, with additional planks and nails required as area increases. A default plot is 2 m². Since crop hitboxes can obstruct tending, the useful goal is a plot you can reach and care for, not the largest footprint your materials allow.
Garden Plot blueprint and the displayed planks and nails.
Hammer or another tool accepted by the construction interaction.
Clear access space around the planned plot.
Inspect the open ground inside your flag radius and choose a level location with space around it.
Place the Garden Plot blueprint and check its default footprint and material requirement.
Before construction, expand the plot only if you have the additional planks and nails shown by the blueprint.
Leave accessible space along at least two sides so you can reach crop tiles while tending.
Complete the plot construction once the footprint fits the site and your material supply.
Plant a small number of crops, then test whether you can interact with each tile from the open sides.
Use the plot for one care and harvest cycle before deciding whether a larger bed is worthwhile.
Farming tips
Avoid walls and clutter near crop tiles; access matters during every inspection and harvest.
Treat the blueprint's displayed material list as authoritative if your skill or current version changes the cost.
Repeat, collect and use
Plot construction is a one-time setup for each bed. You can build additional plots when space and materials permit, but expansion is limited by flag boundaries and workable access.
Common mistakes
Expanding the footprint without planning access can leave crops hard to tend; reserve open sides first.
Placing the plot outside the flag area can block intended base construction; verify the boundary before placement.
Gathering only default materials for an expanded blueprint can stall construction; check the cost after resizing.
When to stop or switch
Stop enlarging once every crop tile is reachable and the bed meets your production needs; use a separate plot if the footprint becomes awkward.
