Farming Fields

Farms turn suitable land and crop inputs into food or ingredients. Choosing a valid footprint and understanding the farm type’s water and fertility limits prevents a field from becoming an idle building.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM

Where to farm

A suitable dirt footprint on the Home Island. Each occupied tile of a Farm requires at least 0.9 layers of dirt; scenario terrain and water conditions can vary.

Place a farm on a footprint with enough dirt, choose an available crop and connect its output to storage or processing. Basic Farms depend on rainfall and cannot accept fertilizer; use a farm variant that supports external inputs when you need those controls.

GET STARTED

How to farm

Before you go

  • Basic Farming research and an available farm building.
  • A footprint with sufficient dirt across every occupied tile.
  • Seeds or an unlocked crop recipe, plus a route for harvested output.
  1. Inspect the land and confirm the whole planned footprint has the required dirt depth.
  2. Place the farm, then open its recipe controls and select a crop that is unlocked for that building.
  3. Connect the farm’s output to suitable storage or the processor that uses the crop.
  4. For a Basic Farm, check rainfall and the farm’s water status; low rainfall can delay or kill a crop.
  5. If dependable external water or fertilizer is needed, select an appropriate farm variant and connect its supported inputs.
  6. Watch the crop status through growth and harvest; check the output route if goods stop moving.
  7. Adjust crop choice or field placement when the current farm cannot supply the demand you planned for.

Farming tips

  • The basic Farm is rain-fed and cannot use fertilizer, even if fertilizer is available elsewhere.
  • Some crops are unavailable to the basic Farm; confirm the building’s recipe list before planning a field around one.

Repeat, collect and use

Farm production repeats as long as the crop is available, the farm has the needed water and the output can leave the building. Harvest volume depends on farm conditions, including fertility where applicable.

Common mistakes

  • Placing the building across shallow dirt: check every occupied tile before committing the footprint.
  • Assuming a Basic Farm accepts irrigation or fertilizer: use a variant that supports the required input.
  • Treating a delayed harvest as a logistics failure: inspect water and crop status before rebuilding the output route.

When to stop or switch

Switch to another crop, farm variant or footprint if the chosen crop is unavailable, water conditions prevent dependable growth, or the output has no useful destination.
