A Basic Farm depends on rainfall. Checking its water status helps distinguish a delayed or failing crop from a problem with crop inputs or output logistics, and can show when another farm variant is needed.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM
Where to farm
The Basic Farm plot and its crop status on the Home Island.
Use the Basic Farm where rainfall can support the crop, then monitor its status rather than assuming a steady water supply. Prolonged lack of rain can delay harvest or kill a crop. If dependable external water is required, plan around a farm variant that accepts it.
Basic Farming research and a Basic Farm placed on suitable dirt.
An unlocked crop available to the Basic Farm.
Storage or processing for harvested output; an alternative water-capable farm variant if rain is unreliable.
Place the Basic Farm on a footprint with at least 0.9 layers of dirt under every occupied tile.
Select a crop supported by the building and connect its output to a useful destination.
Check the farm’s water and crop status after planting.
When growth slows, inspect rainfall and water status before changing the crop’s output route.
Allow the farm to continue only while its status indicates that the crop can grow under current conditions.
If dependable external water is necessary, move the plan to a suitable farm variant that supports external water.
Recheck the crop and output after the change to confirm the new arrangement addresses the constraint.
Farming tips
The Basic Farm cannot use fertilizer, so fertility restoration requires a compatible farm variant.
Some crops cannot be planted in the Basic Farm; verify recipe availability in the building.
Repeat, collect and use
The farm’s crop cycle repeats when rainfall supports growth and its output can be collected. Rain itself is variable; the farm does not provide a guaranteed harvest under drought conditions.
Common mistakes
Assuming rain-fed operation guarantees a harvest: monitor water status and respond to delays.
Trying to solve poor rainfall by connecting fertilizer: the Basic Farm cannot use it.
Blaming the output route for every stalled crop: check the farm’s water condition first.
When to stop or switch
Switch to a water-capable farm setup when rainfall cannot support the crop reliably, or change the crop if the current Basic Farm recipe is unavailable.
