WHERE & HOW TO FARM
Where to farm
At a Bee Box built near a flower bed in the surface world of Don’t Starve.
Build a Bee Box when you want a recurring Honey source at camp. The structure is prototyped at a Science Machine and uses a Honeycomb, four Bees, and two Boards. Honey production depends on nearby flowers: the reference specifies that six or more flowers support production, while fewer can halt the loop. This makes the flower bed part of the production site, rather than optional decoration. Harvesting is also a combat interaction because worker bees emerge and can attack, so bring protection or plan a quick retreat. Winter pauses production because bees stay inside, but harvesting then does not release them. Set the box where you can reach the flowers and return to camp safely; do not treat Honey output as guaranteed in winter or while the box lacks flowers.
Science Machine to prototype the Bee Box, plus one Honeycomb, four Bees, and two Boards.
At least six nearby flowers to support honey production.
A Beekeeper Hat or another safe plan for handling defensive bees at harvest.
Prototype the Bee Box at a Science Machine and gather its listed construction materials.
Place it at a camp location with a clear walk path and enough room to plant or maintain nearby flowers.
Bring flowers into the production area; check that at least six are within the box’s reach before expecting it to produce.
Install the Bee Box and let worker bees visit flowers during active seasons.
Check the box before harvesting so you do not make a dangerous trip for an empty inventory.
Wear a Beekeeper Hat if available, or collect the Honey and move away promptly when bees emerge.
Store Honey for cooking or other planned use, then keep the flowers intact around the box.
During winter, use saved Honey or other foods and resume collection after bee activity returns.
Farming tips
Flowers support the box’s production; an attractive location without flowers does not replace them.
The wiki describes a slower off-screen production model when the player is far away, but still requires a nearby flower, so use the box inventory as the source of truth.
Repeat, collect and use
Repeat the harvest when the box contains Honey and the route is safe. Flower availability and season affect production; a box is not a winter food guarantee.
Common mistakes
Building the box before arranging enough flowers around it.
Harvesting without accounting for bees that emerge and attack.
Expecting Honey production to continue in winter while bees remain indoors.
When to stop or switch
Pause the route during winter or when the box is empty; return after flowers and bee activity can support another batch.
