WHERE & HOW TO FARM
Where to farm
Follow Suspicious Dirt Pile tracks in the overworld until the trail ends at a Koalefant; RoG can alter the possible endpoint.
Use Suspicious Dirt Piles to track a Koalefant when you need its Trunk for the Breezy Vest in the base game. Examine a pile, then follow the footprint it leaves to the next pile; the trail progresses across the world until it ends at an animal. The Koalefant avoids the player until attacked, then becomes hostile, so decide how to fight before starting the encounter. A Koalefant drops its Trunk and meat; the Trunk can be crafted into a Breezy Vest and can also be fed to a Birdcage bird for an Egg. In Reign of Giants, the trail can instead end at a Varg or Ewecus, so the base-game expectation is not guaranteed when that DLC is active. Avoid tracking in or immediately after rain, when the next footprint may fail to appear.
A weapon and armor suitable for a hostile animal encounter.
Inventory space for the Trunk and meat.
Optional: a Birdcage if you intend to trade the Trunk for an Egg instead of crafting clothing.
Search the overworld for a Suspicious Dirt Pile and examine it to reveal the next footprint.
Follow the footprint to the next pile; the trail can span several screens, so use roads or open terrain where practical.
Continue examining piles until the trail ends and identify the animal before attacking.
If the trail ends at a Koalefant, choose a safe combat area away from shore so loot cannot land in water.
Fight the Koalefant with a planned approach and collect the Trunk and meat after it falls.
Use the Trunk for the Breezy Vest craft, or feed it to a caged bird if an Egg better serves your current need.
If Reign of Giants is enabled and a Varg or Ewecus appears instead, respond to that encounter rather than assuming the base-game Koalefant route.
Resume tracking later when the Trunk is needed again; avoid wet conditions that can interrupt trails.
Farming tips
In Reign of Giants, the Koalefant trail may end at a Varg or Ewecus; the guide’s Koalefant result is specifically the base-game route.
Keep the fight away from water, where dropped resources can become unreachable.
Repeat, collect and use
Repeat by locating another Suspicious Dirt Pile and following its trail. The route depends on a track appearing and does not promise a Koalefant every time with RoG enabled.
Common mistakes
Leaving a Suspicious Dirt Pile unexplored until it changes location.
Following a trail during or just after rain when a footprint may not appear.
Attacking near the coast and losing the Trunk in water.
When to stop or switch
Stop when you have the Trunk needed for your planned craft or bird trade, or when the trail ends in a different RoG creature than you are equipped to fight.
