Clay is an island reef material used in crafting and can be gathered during the same underwater trip as Sand and metals.

Search the underwater reef around an island for Clay deposits and harvest them with a Hook. The practical farm is a careful reef circuit: anchor, follow the foundation, collect visible nodes and surface before oxygen runs low. Clay is a distinct resource from Sand, so check each deposit before harvesting.
Clay can be collected again during later island visits. The reef trip is repeatable, though the actual nodes available depend on the island you visit.
Stop when you have the Clay needed for the recipes on your list, or when your remaining oxygen or supplies make another pass unsafe.
