WHERE & HOW TO FARM
Where to farm
Scrap Metal piles in the Greylands north of the Oak Forest; later, Sewers and Forbidden Monuments also have Scrap Metal.
The direct scavenging route for Iron begins at Scrap Metal piles in the Greylands, where a Flint Pickaxe can mine Iron Shards. Iron Ingots are a later processing goal: build a Windmill to unlock the Furnace, then smelt Shards with Charcoal. Giant artifact parts can provide a fallback source of Shards at the Furnace.
Charcoal for smelting Iron Shards into Iron Ingots.
Combat gear and carrying capacity for a Greylands expedition.
Check that you have a Flint Pickaxe before setting out for Scrap Metal.
Travel north from the Oak Forest into the Greylands and locate Scrap Metal piles.
Mine the piles and collect the Iron Shards; do not expect raw Scrap Metal to be the finished ingot.
Return home and confirm the Furnace is available. If it is not, progress to building a Windmill first.
At the Furnace, select the Iron Ingot recipe and supply Iron Shards and Charcoal.
Collect the completed Iron Ingots and store them for the recipe or equipment you are pursuing.
If you already have Bottlecaps and Screws, check the Furnace recipes for the Shard conversion as an alternate input route.
Farming tips
The Greylands Scrap Metal route is the direct gathering method described for Iron Shards.
Keep Shards and Charcoal together in storage near the Furnace to make later batches easier to manage.
Repeat, collect and use
Repeat the Greylands scavenging and Furnace processing as needed while Scrap Metal is available. Artifact conversion is a supplemental route, not a substitute for checking its required inputs.
Common mistakes
Going without a Flint Pickaxe: bring the required tool before leaving base.
Expecting Iron Ingots directly from Scrap Metal: mine Shards, then smelt them.
Attempting to use the Furnace before its Windmill gate: unlock it through the stated progression first.
When to stop or switch
Stop when you have enough ingots for the immediate recipe plus any reserve you intend to keep; switch to another progression task if Windmill or Furnace access is still missing.
