Saltpeter nodes in regions you have explored; refine the gathered material at an Apothecary Table.
Saltpeter is processed into Refined Saltpeter at an Apothecary Table. Check whether your recipe wants raw or refined material before setting out, then gather from Saltpeter nodes and return to process the amount you need. Store raw and refined stacks separately so the right form is ready for crafting.

Inventory space for Saltpeter and other gathered items.
An Apothecary Table with the Refined Saltpeter recipe available.
A recipe target or reserve for the refined output.
Read the intended recipe and confirm it specifically requires Refined Saltpeter.
Travel to a Saltpeter node in an area you can safely reach.
Harvest the node and check your inventory for the raw Saltpeter item.
Gather from additional reachable nodes only while you have space and the route is safe.
Return to base with the raw material and keep it separate from refined stock.
Use the Apothecary Table recipe to process Saltpeter into Refined Saltpeter.
Move the processed material to the craft or storage where it is needed.
