Belts and inserters move materials between production machines, buffers, and consumers.

WHERE & HOW TO FARM
Where to farm
Factory floor between a machine output and its next machine, container, or elevator destination.
A reliable belt line has an identifiable source, a connected machine port, and a known destination. Start with one item and one consumer, confirm that items move, then add filters or separate lanes when a machine such as a Thresher produces multiple outputs. Buffers help keep transport and production from blocking each other.
A source machine or container and a destination with an available input port.
Filter Inserter for routing a selected item from mixed outputs.
Container buffers if the line needs more storage than elevator transfer permits.
Identify the exact item and its source port before laying a route.
Place a belt from the source area toward one intended consumer or storage container.
Connect an Inserter to the machine port and belt so it can transfer the item.
Run a small amount of material through the line and verify that it reaches the destination.
If the source produces several items, add a Filter Inserter set to the required product and give other outputs their own route.
Use a container buffer where the line feeds a longer route or the elevator.
Inspect the destination port and belt whenever production stops; clear full buffers or correct a misrouted item.
Farming tips
The elevator holds only a stack of each item per floor in the described setup; adjacent containers provide a larger buffer.
A short test run reveals port and filter errors before you build a large belt network.
Repeat, collect and use
Repeat this source-to-destination pattern for each item. The transport loop continues only while the source, destination capacity, and machine connections remain available.
Common mistakes
Belt passes near a machine without connecting to its port: place and test an Inserter connection.
Mixed outputs share an unfiltered lane: filter the desired item and route other products separately.
Using the elevator as unlimited storage: add containers to increase the buffer.
When to stop or switch
Stop adding belts once the target item reaches its consumer consistently and the buffer does not overflow; add a separate line if another item needs different routing.
